Detoxification

Why you need to detoxify?
We detoxify/cleanse for many reasons, mainly we all want to enjoy a healthy life, boundless energy, peaceful sleep and a sense of serenity. But increasingly the world around us presents us with some real challenges in realising these goals.

Reasons for Cleansing

  • Prevent disease
  • Reduce symptoms
  • Treat disease
  • Cleanse body
  • Rest organs
  • Purification
  • Rejuvenation
  • Weight loss
  • Clear skin
  • Slow aging
  • Improve flexibility
  • Improve fertility
  • Enhance the senses

These challenges include the airborne pollutants that you breathe in such as industrial pollutants from hundreds of different sources, urban ones such as car fumes, social ones such as cigarette smoke, domestic ones such as household and cosmetic chemicals, and can also come as a result of the damaging effects of radiation and electromagnetic fields (even sitting in front of the television can cause problems). They include the thousands of toxic chemicals that can be in your food as a result of agricultural processes, food processes and preserving, from the water supply or by accident. They also come from the substances applied to your skin, from drugs (social or medical), medications and a number of other miscellaneous sources. Furthermore, a number of toxic substances are made in your body as you metabolise used tissues and materials such as hormones that have done their job.

The liver is your body's filter, charged with neutralising all sorts of substances from the waste products of everyday metabolism to the ever-increasing load of toxins from our air, water, food, cosmetics and workplace. One of the most serious results of an overstressed or toxic liver is that it becomes bogged down, it can't fully metabolise fat. As a result, it dumps fat and cholesterol back into the bloodstream, sabotaging your weight loss and putting you at risk for numerous health problems, including indigestion, fatigue, high cholesterol, depression, mood swings, lupus, arthritis and other autoimmune conditions. A toxic liver also creates disastrous results for your skin, leaving you with a tendency to blotchy patches and rashes. The efficient processing of toxins can protect you from a variety of degenerative diseases including heart disease, diabetes and arthritis, and can also reduce your risk of getting cancer.

A toxic liver can also contribute to cravings, such as sugar cravings or a craving for chocolate or alcohol; once you improve the state of your liver it will be much easier to stick to a healthy eating programme. This can improve not only your health, but also your weight, since you will no longer feel like going on those sugar or alcohol binges.

As if all that isn't enough, your liver is also important for your moods and emotional state and for your memory and your ability to think and concentrate clearly. Furthermore, an unhealthy liver, by its negative effect on your energy levels, can leave you too tired to bother, if not our and out exhausted. In this and many other ways the functioning of your liver will affect your emotions, attitude, mood and thinking.

Meanwhile, your colon is designed to eliminate both natural bodily waste and toxins - a likewise labouring under a double strain. If your are not getting enough fiber, and most of us aren't, especially if you are on a low-carb diet, your colon doesn't have the support it needs to do its job. An overworked colon means that toxins and bile (a crucial substance produced by the liver) can sit in your gut too long. Eventually, your body reabsorbs the toxins and sends them back to the liver once again. So colon cleansing is one of the most important parts of detoxification.

Yet there is some good news. Our body is an incredible feat of biomechanical engineering. All we need to do is give it the tools - and that includes a 'detox' - to repair the damage wreaked by an overload of toxins, and it will put us back onto the path to wellbeing.

When we begin to detoxify, whether through fasting or another means (eg. detox-cleansing formula supplement) two simultaneous procedures begin. One takes place on the cellular level, as each of our body's cells get an opportunity to release any toxins it may hold. That's why drinking lots of fluids is such an important part of any fast - it helps flush out these toxins as they are released into the bloodstream.

At the same time, our organs have an extra chance to eliminate toxins stored inside the body but outside the cells. Faecal matter that has clogged the colon, for example, or mucus that has blocked the lungs, may be released. We may urinate or defecate more than usual or we may find ourselves sweating, coughing or experiencing other symptoms of our body's new determination to unload to poisons it has stored for so long. We also cleanse/detoxify to rest our overloaded organs of digestion and our liver, gallbladder, and kidneys and allow them to catch up on past work. Most often our energy is increased and more steady. There are many reasons why we may want to cleanse.
